I’m living proof you can win the battle over burnout and get your fire back.

In May 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the 11th revision of its International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems and a much more detailed entry on burnout. Previously defined only as a “state of vital exhaustion,” it’s now classified as a “syndrome.”

While a little stress can inspire us to leap tall buildings in a single bound, once you are under stress for too long it can turn unproductive. When you’re suffering from burnout, it’s more than fatigue: you have a deep sense of disillusionment and hopelessness that your efforts are useless; work and life loses its meaning, and even the small of tasks feel laborious; your motivation dries up and you lose interest in your favorite activities with family and friends.

Although the World Health Organization focuses on burnout within the context of work, below are three areas of life that I have found put myself and my clientsat risk for burnout today:

  • Workplace Burnout: A recent Gallup study found that that 23% of individuals balancing work and life report feeling burned out very often, with an additional 44% feeling burned out sometimes.

  • Caregiver Burnout: According to the Cleveland Clinic, caregiver burnout is a state of exhaustion that occurs when individuals dedicate their time and energy to managing the health and safety of others.

  • Political Burnout: A 2024 survey from the American Psychological Association revealed 77% of adults express concerns about the future of the nation. Psychology Today says we are experiencing political burnout due to fear-based news and "us vs. them" mentality.

There are steps you can take to win the battle over burnout, you can: learn to spot red flags and root causes; get educated on systematic triggers; set strategic goals that focus on prevention and protection of boundaries. Below is a little about my own burnout backstory. A clip from a webinar about stress vs burnout and some tips on what you can start doing to prevent burnout from robbing your joy. There is also a link for you to take the burnout quiz and discover how your level of burnout is impacting you and achieving your goals.
