Greater Advantage Theory

A mindset and faith-integrated strategy for being, doing, and having Greater—in work, life, and love.

**WHITE PAPER COMING SOON**

The Greater Advantage Theory is the foundation of my coaching methodology and process, designed to help people of faith grow personally, professionally, and spiritually. Rooted in twenty years of practice-based research and real-world experience, this mindset and strategy integrates high-quality training and coaching with faith-based principles to help believers fulfill their calling and reach their goals. The theory is anchored in a powerful truth found in 1 John 4:4, which reminds us that we have already been given the power to overcome both internal and external obstacles—those forces that come to steal, kill, and destroy. It is built on the belief and the promise that greater is the Spirit within you than the spirit that is in the world. My mission is to help believers rise up and demonstrate the power of faith in action, becoming living testimonies who turn hearts back to God through visible, purpose-driven success in work, life, and love.

Nearly two decades ago, an article titled “Life Coaching Craze and the Church” (circa 2005) by The Institute for Life Enrichment laid out a compelling case for why personal development is essential within the church. The Institute—a provider of psychotherapy and psychiatric services—noted a growing trend of counselors and therapists transitioning into coaching, especially within faith communities. Their goal: to empower believers to pursue their God-given purpose with clarity and accountability. This kind of support strengthens the church by helping leaders who may be too busy to give individual attention to members who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or out of balance. When those members gain clarity about their calling and take aligned action, they become more engaged in the church’s mission and serve as beacons of hope in their families and communities.

Today, this insight is more relevant than ever. Below, you’ll hear directly from a group of pastors and bishops who affirm the need for programs like this—especially to support congregants in applying the Word of God after they hear it.

What’s After the Word?

It all started with a profound question: “What happens after the Word?” That question was posed by Bishop Keith Farmer and a panel of church leaders during a broadcast on WCEG Talk Radio. It echoed the heartfelt concern of a pastor and guest caller who shared what she often hears from members after a sermon—that they need more support to apply the message, overcome challenges, and see real results. In that moment, Bishop Farmer turned to me for insight from a coaching perspective.

I deeply related to how that pastor’s members felt. When I first received a Word from God about my own assignment, I wrestled with clarity and confidence. I was like the sower in Scripture, scattering seeds with enthusiasm. Some fell by the wayside, some landed on rocky ground, and others took root only temporarily. When the trials came—for me, it was the Great Recession—I was wiped out.

Before 2008, I had been climbing the ladder of success and pushing through life’s storms, unaware that I was heading toward burnout. The financial storm of the recession became my Jonah moment, landing me in the belly of the whale—stuck in a cycle of unfulfilled dreams. And yet, even then, all things were working together for my good. I continued to grow, to heal, and to develop my business, Greater Advantage, and the G.R.E.A.T.E.R. Methodology.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight and hard-earned wisdom, I am on a mission to help others overcome burnout, renew their strength, and cross the finish line of their calling. That’s why I’m excited to share The Greater Advantage Theory—a mindset and faith-focused strategy for being, doing, and having greater.

GREATER ADVANTAGE THEORY IN ACTION

The Greater Advantage Theory is a mindset and faith-integrated strategy for being, doing, and having greater in work, life, and love. We are living in a season of urgency, what I call overtime. Now more than ever, we must encourage one another to be more than hearers of the Word. We must overcome resistance and become doers. When we live out our faith with clarity and consistency, we become living testimonies of God’s power in action—visible, purpose-driven success that draws others back to Him. The truth is, most people of faith need support applying what they hear in church or read in the Bible to their everyday lives. That is where this process comes in. ABOUT COACH KIM BETTIE AND THE BACKSTORY

I am the CEO and CKO (Chief Knowledge Officer) of Greater Advantage, a socially conscious coaching practice. Socially conscious entrepreneurs are committed to addressing the challenges within their communities and creating meaningful change. My decision to leave the corporate world and start my own business was revelational. In 2003, while attending Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, I heard from God regarding my assignment. Reverend Dr. Charles Adams was preaching about contrary winds and how they take us on a journey of faith. That day, I received a Word from God: “Do for the church what you have done for General Motors.”

At the time, one of my primary roles at General Motors was rolling out Individual Growth Strategies designed to educate and empower employees to take personal responsibility for managing their career development and removing barriers to making a greater contribution to the organization. Leaders acknowledged that they could not oversee the career paths of every employee, so they completed a module on becoming developmental managers and leading change. Our work earned the North American Operations Award for outstanding cultural change. Witnessing firsthand the impact of equipping employees with high-quality training and coaching, I became passionate about making professional growth more accessible to all. I knew that given the right tools, people could unlock their full potential.

That morning, as I listened to PA (what we called Pastor Adams), I had a revelation: the strategic tools I had used throughout my career aligned with the biblical journey to the Promised Land. The same way I had helped corporate employees navigate career development, I could help the church community apply biblical principles to personal and spiritual growth. Inspired and eager, I took a leap of faith to fulfill my calling. But like many of you who have stepped into your purpose, I soon encountered contrary winds of my own. In 2005, I accepted a buyout from my six-figure job to start my own coaching practice. However, I quickly realized that while my heart was in the right place, my body and mind were exhausted, and I was burned out. I was navigating an internal storm, only to be met with an external storm—the recession—which caused me to lose everything—except my faith.

I found my way out by refocusing on my purpose. I developed G.R.E.A.T.E.R. Methodology, wrote The 14-Day Experiment, and became the producer and host of a talk show for a Christian station on 1500 AM in Detroit. This led to sharing tips from my book on The Word Network. As God would have it, I now have wisdom from both applying the Word I heard from Pastor Adams and walking my own journey to the Promised Land. What did I learn? That greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world and that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. While I continue to have great success supporting corporate leaders and teams, I am more determined than ever to help church leaders, members and and purpose-driven believers. Through Greater Advantage, I offer coaching that honors the whole person. This is not just what I do—it’s how I serve. Coaching is the tool. Transformation is the outcome. And God gets the glory.
